The pancreas is one of the body’s most important—and often overlooked—organs. It works quietly behind the scenes, connecting digestion, nutrition, energy, and blood-sugar control.


What is the pancreas?


The pancreas is a soft, elongated gland about the length of your hand. It belongs to two body systems at once: the digestive system and the endocrine system.


It has several main regions: the head, which sits beside the duodenum; the neck and body, which extend across the upper abdomen; and the tail, which reaches toward the spleen.


Where is it?


The pancreas sits deep in the upper abdomen, behind the stomach, close to the duodenum—the first part of the small intestine. Because it lies so deep inside the body, pancreatic problems aren't always obvious from the outside.


What does it do?


Think of the pancreas as having two jobs running simultaneously.


1. It digests your food.

The pancreas produces pancreatic juice containing powerful digestive enzymes. These enzymes travel through the pancreatic duct into the small intestine and help break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates so nutrients can be absorbed.


2. It controls your blood sugar.

Special clusters of cells called the islets of Langerhans release hormones into the bloodstream. Two especially important ones are:


Insulin — lowers blood glucose by helping cells take in and store glucose.

Glucagon — raises blood glucose when levels become too low.


Together, these hormones help keep the body's energy supply within a workable range.


How important is it?


Extremely important.


Without enough pancreatic digestive enzymes, you may eat normally yet fail to absorb nutrients properly. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency can cause diarrhea, greasy or foul-smelling stools, bloating, weight loss and eventually malnutrition.


Without adequate insulin production, blood glucose can rise dangerously. So the pancreas essentially helps answer two fundamental questions every time you eat:


Can the body break this food down?

And what should the body do with the energy afterward?


Can you live without a pancreas?


Yes—but not normally without lifelong medical treatment.


A person's entire pancreas can sometimes be surgically removed, called a total pancreatectomy. Once the pancreas is gone, the body can no longer produce its normal supply of insulin or pancreatic digestive enzymes.


The person generally requires lifelong insulin treatment to control blood sugar and pancreatic enzyme replacement with meals to digest food properly. In selected situations, insulin-producing islet cells may be transplanted or preserved during certain pancreatic procedures.


So, you can survive without the organ, but modern medicine has to replace some of the work it once performed continuously.
